The Shawnee
Mission School District |

Covers seventy-two square miles and offers diverse programs to a
student population of nearly 32,000. In addition to providing a strong core
curriculum, Shawnee Mission also provides innovative instructional
opportunities including the International Baccalaureate Program for
academically talented and highly motivated students, and the Center for
International Studies, which is open to students in grades 9 through 12, who
are interested in developing skills in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.
The district also offers gifted and talented pupils direct services in grades
K-12, and the district special education program includes a complete range of
services for pupils ages 3-21
Many of the district's 55 schools have
been recognized for academic achievement. Shawnee Mission students consistently
score in the top 10 percent of public and private schools in the nation on
standardized tests. In 1999, Shawnee Mission students taking the Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT) earned the highest
scores in district history, with a composite score of 23.4 on the ACT and a
total score of 1185 on the SAT. Thirty-eight Shawnee Mission students were
named National Merit Finalists in the 1999-2000 school year.
